The Shiv Sena on Tuesday won the crucial battle for its survival in Mumbai by retaining control of the civic corporation.

Its nominee Shraddha Jadhav (45) won the mayoral election defeating Congress’s Priscila Kadam. Jadhav secured 114 votes to Kadam’s 95.
The Sena got indirect assistance from its rival, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, which abstained from voting. The Samajwadi Party’s walkout also helped the saffron party as its votes could have otherwise gone to the Congress.
The Congress was hoping to wrench control from the Sena through the mayoral poll. The Sena-BJP combine is the ruling party in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which is one of the biggest municipal bodies in India.
The Congress had roped in former Sainik and Revenue Minister Narayan Rane, hoping he would pull off a coup, but Uddhav Thackeray managed to keep his flock together.
After the defeat in the Assembly elections two months ago, winning this poll was critical for Thackeray.
The party’s Versova corporator Chhaya Bhanji, who had been reported missing since Sunday, turned up and voted for the Sena.
