Four days after the body of Karishma Chavan, 3, was found in an abandoned compound close to Vij Bhavan at Nariman Point, the police have made a sketch of the accused, said locals from the area. The police have, however, rubbished the claims.
“The police are asking residents if they have spotted the accused in the vicinity,” said a resident on condition of anonymity.
However, there was no confirmation from the police. “We have not made any sketch. We are following the leads provided by a three-year-old girl from the locality who claims to have seen the kidnapper. But as she is too young, she is unable to provide the finer details,” said inspector S Mandlik of Colaba police station.
The spot where the body was found has been illuminated with halogen lights.
“Our priorities are solving the case and prevention of recurrence. Some of the best policemen are coordinating with the crime branch to find the accused,” said Iqbal Shaikh, assistant commissioner of police (Colaba division).
“We are also working on creating awareness in south Mumbai about such instances,” he added.
Shaikh said that officers from the unit at Nehru Nagar, where similar killing of children was reported in 2010, have been roped in to investigate the case.
“We have also involved the police personnel who solved the Nehru Nagar serial rape and murder cases in Kurla in 2010 for this case,” said Shaikh.
Nisar Tamboli, spokesperson for the Mumbai police, said, “Security has been beefed up in south Mumbai. We are also asking people to be more careful with regards to their children,” said Tamboli.
