Speeding ST bus runs over polio-stricken woman at Dadar

A week after she lost her father, a 31-year-old woman was crushed under the rear wheels of a State Transport bus before being hit by a taxi at Dadar on Monday morning.

The incident took place around 10.30am at Bharatmata junction in Dadar (East).

Vidya Rane, a resident of Lalbaug, who suffered from polio, had just left her residence and was going to a tailoring shop located opposite her house.

“A State Transport bus was going towards Matunga at high speed,” said S Jain, senior police inspector of the Kalachowkie police station.

“The bus hit Vidya as she was crossing the road. The woman was lying injured on the ground, when a taxi that was just behind the ST bus, also crushed her under its tyres,” the senior police inspector added.

A biker, who was passing by, rushed Vidya to the KEM Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

In the meantime, locals managed to halt the ST bus and handed over the driver, Ravindra Malik, 50, to the Kalachowkie police.

Malik, a resident of Satara district, was arrested for rash and negligent driving and causing death due to negligence.

“Malik was speeding and was held for rash driving,” Jain added.
