Crime branch investigators suspect these diamonds could have been smuggled or acquired in exchange for hawala transactions.

On Tuesday, Mehta, a diamond merchant, his employee Chandrasen Berde, 49, friend Shamshuddin Azmi, 47, a realty broker from Bandra and master locksmith from Bhayandar Farid Hasmi, 47, were arrested by the crime branch for breaking into lockers at the Bank Of India's Opera House branch and stealing diamonds.

Though the bank had received internal complaints (from customers) about the disappearance of the valuables and cash, the complaints never reached the police.
