In its crackdown against illegal structures, the Thane Municipal Corporation has decided to carry out structural audits of building in the city.

The corporation will block the water and sewage connections of all illegal constructions in Thane starting with Mumbra and Diva.
The civic body has formed a special encroachment committee to demolish such constructions in the city.
RA Rajeev, Thane civic commissioner, conducted a meeting on Monday to decide the course of action. He also surveyed Mumbra and Shil areas with other corporation officials on Monday.
At present, there are more than 2,000 illegal buildings in Mumbra, and 40 are under-construction in the area, with another 50 in Diva.
“Our manpower is low compared to the challenge ahead of us. Hence, we have taken a series of decisions to tackle the problems of illegal construction in the city,” Rajeev said.
A special team comprising deputy city engineer, two executive engineers, three deputy engineers and six junior engineers will be formed. “The team will first demolish 57 dangerous buildings in Mumbra as well illegal under-construction structures. We will also block the water and sewage lines of all such places,” said Sandeep Malvi, public relation officer, TMC.
To speed up legal proceedings, the TMC has appointed nine lawyers, one for each of the nine wards.
