The Kasturba Marg police said Pramod Kadav (32), who got married less than two months ago, and Jayesh Mazgaonkar (27), had gone to the park for a picnic with four friends.

All of them were residents of Vikas Maratha Mandal Chawl at Vakola, Santacruz (East). At 2 pm the men decided to go for a swim in the dam, ignoring a board that said swimming in the dam was risky.

The police said Mazgaonkar jumped into the water first but could not swim because of strong currents. He started shouting for help.

Kadav jumped in to rescue him but they were washed away.

Local residents and the other friends informed the tourism police patrolling nearby.

The Kasturba police and fire brigade also rushed to the spot and began rescue efforts.

"While Mazgaonkar's body was traced at around 6.30 pm, Kadav’s body was found at around 8 pm," said a police officer. The duo was working for a private firm.

They were rushed to Bhagwati Hospital at Borivli where they were declared dead on arrival.

The police have registered a case of accidental death.
