Uncovered drains, BMC apathy dangerous combination: experts

Broken drain covers, open drains filled with garbage and poor desilting are some of the major problem areas according to the panel of citizens that conducted the audit of the pre-monsoon work in the ward.

"Areas outside the Dadar and Mahim railway stations get flooded after heavy rain. The BMC seems apathetic towards cleaning the storm-water drains that carry the rainwater from major roads in these areas," said Ashok Ravat, president of Citizens' Forum G-North.

The ward also has several open and uncovered drains. The drain pipes on two major roads in Mahim - Lady Jamshedji Road and Mian Mohammed Chhotani Road - are either poorly covered or completely uncovered.

"There have been several instances where drain covers have been stolen within days of new ones being placed," said a civic official. Citizens want that the BMC to collaborate with citizens to improve the situation.
