The scribes covering the Group A World Cup tie between New Zealand and Canada, on Sunday, observed a minute's silence in memory of Vijayakar, who was the assistant editor of the Times of India, just before the commencement of the tie.

Vijayakar had been covering matches held at this venue since the stadium was built first in 1974-75.

The stadium underwent a total revamp in mid-2008 and work got completed just in time to host the Cup ties, including the April 2 summit clash.
