The accused, Ayub Allahbaksh Shaikh, 54, was employed as a security guard at Agarwal Nirmad Tower, in Kandivali (West). On October 26, Shaikh broke into the apartment of businessman Vilas Chhabaria, 27, who was away at Tirupati with his family. The accused entered the house by breaking open the grill on the window and made away with gold and silver ornaments.

The family realised their house had been burgled only when they returned on November 1. “We suspected the watchman’s involvement as he was missing,” said Hareshwar Pimple, senior police inspector with the Kandivili police station.

Shaikh was eventually traced to Kolhapur, police said.
