After the chaos subsided, a dazed Disha Mehta, 22, her brother Aakash, 18, and friend Kirti Khandaria, 21, all residents of Lokhandwala Complex in Andheri (West), stepped out of the car.

The police said that Disha was not driving drunk.

Disha, Kirti - both students of an Andheri college - and Aakash were heading towards Colaba for a friend's birthday party in Disha's white Honda Accord, when the accident took place at 5.30pm on NS Road.

When the man riding a Yamaha cut the lane ahead of her, Disha swerved the car to the left to avoid hitting him, but she lost control of the vehicle and it climbed on the pavement.

The speeding car first hit the steel benches on the pavement, and then ran over three parked cars and eight bikes along the road. The car then rammed into a banana vendor and his stall before coming to halt. Locals took Disha, Kirti and the vendor to GT Hospital.

"The vendor sustained minor injuries. We have only booked Disha under section 297 (trespassing on burial places) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code," said Avinash Shingte, inspector of Marine Drive police station.

"Disha was not driving under the influence of alcohol," he added.
