Sangeeta Tiwari, a resident of Madh Island, found her three-year-old daughter missing on Monday morning. She also found her husband’s friend, Deepak Prasad, missing. Prasad had been living with the Tiwaris for the last three months, and was working with Sangeeta’s husband, Asharfilal.

Police called Tiwari’s husband, who was in Azamgarh, because his mother was ill.

Police learnt that some neighbours had seen Prasad leave home with Payal in his arms on Monday morning.

When Tiwari was told about this, she claimed that Prasad had kidnapped Payal to take revenge. “She told us the background, which she had kept secret from her husband until then. We then registered a complaint,” said M. Surve, of the Malwani police station.

Tiwari told the police that in her husband’s absence, Prasad had proposed to her, but she turned him down. He also asked her to elope with him but she had threatened to call her husband.

A police team has been sent to Azamgarh to look for Prasad.
