Free charity concerts like Live Aid are major events around the world. Singer Sanjeevani Bhelande is bringing the concept closer home by performing on stage to help the Each One Teach One (EOTO) foundation raise funds for the education of rural children.

Having done charitable concerts across the world, Sanjeevani considers education for children integral for their healthy growth. “Since I come from an educational background with most of my family members being teachers, I realise its importance. That’s why I’ve associated with EOTO for this initiative,” says Bhelande.

Talking about the performance, she says, “I will be singing popular classical songs by Noor Jehan, Shamshad Begum, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. I will also sing my tracks from films like Kareeb (1998) and Socha Na Tha (2006), and from my recent album ‘Meera And Me’.”

EOTO, which was initiated in 1983 with the objective of educating underprivileged children, was the brainchild of Jyoti Tanna, the chairperson of EOTO.

“We started the organisation with just five students. Today, we have seven municipal and two government schools associated with this project, with 40 teachers. We are functional in Mumbai, Bengaluru and some villages in Maharashtra. We look after all the children’s requirements, including education, coaching, uniforms, text books and birthday gifts every month,” says Tanna.

This is the second fund raising concert by EOTO after the first one in 2008. “We’re having this concert to raise funds for installing computers in schools. I believe that IT education is necessary to nurture the kids’ potential. We have great support from firms like Wipro and the Smile Foundation, while Trans Asia is sponsoring the concert,” says Tanna.
