One of the world’s best known DJs, Charles Schillings is considered the ‘Spin God’ in France. When he takes over the console court, turntables become his job and the audience his God.

Yes, he is the Spin It Right man, who in the past 15 years has beaten everyone to dust with his mix of eclectic House with Rock, Electro-Funk, Soul, Groove and Jazz. His love for fashion, too, shows in his year-long association with style gurus such as Karl Lagerfield, Georgio Armani, LouisVuitton and Calvin Klein, to name a few.

Talking to HT City while on the move, Schillings shares with us his expectations from his upcoming India visit.

This is your first visit to Delhi. What are your expectations?
I’ve been to India before. Eight years ago, I came to Mumbai for the launch of a French TV channel, but I stayed only 48 hours, so I didn’t have the time to really enjoy in India. This time, I’m coming to present my latest album, and to soak up everything exotic in the country. I hope that the indian crowd will enjoy my music and that all will go well.

Everyone here remembers you as the Spin it Right boy. Your comments.
Spin it Right was in 2004. It was the beginning of the electronic music era. It was an album about to my love for rock and the 80s in Belgium. It was the first time we did a clip with a photo camera. Things have changed a lot now, and I didn’t know I was known as the Spin it Right boy.

With three albums in your cap, what’s the theme of your fourth album?
All three albums — were done with some colleagues of mine. The fourth one I will do by myself and it will be more electronic and spatial.

Any Indian DJ or musician that you would want to work with, in the near future?
I have to say that I don’t know so many Indian DJs but I hope that during this tour I will get to know some and that there would be collaboration out of it.

One Indian musician that you admire, and why?
Ravi Shankar was of course the first one I got to know when I was young and in my spiritual quest... One that I admire is Ashra Puthli and her song and interpretation on Sex Chants.

A DJ, composer and sound engineer — what avatars next? Are we going to see you make music for Hollywood or Bollywood sometime soon?
I would love to make some music for Hollywood or Bollywood or even get a Michelin Star for my restaurant since I love cooking.

What are the places that you would want to visit, in India?
I would love to see the big cities. And of course Kerala, Rajasthan and Darjeeling.

Tell us something about your kind of music. How do you think you have made a difference in the music industry?
During all the years that I worked as a DJ, I learned to be a ‘multi specialist’. Most people focus only on one part, but I learnt to be very open, not monotonic, and bring freshness to the public while also adapting myself to the crowd.
