NEW DELHI: The army has deferred an annual promotion exam for young commanders for two months, amid rising tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) following the September 29 surgical strikes. Army sources said the exam was postponed as forward positions are commanded by young captains and majors who cannot be spared at this critical juncture. Leave restrictions are already in place. The exam, known as Part D, will be conducted from December 24-29 instead of October 19-24. Spread over six days, it tests the knowledge of officers in areas such as military history, current affairs, military law, administration and tactics. The army issued a letter on October 14 informing all its commands about the re-scheduling of the exam. However, it only mentioned “amendment in schedule” without listing out any reason. Officers can’t be promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel until they clear the Part D exam.

BHUBANESWAR: A Dalit man who succumbed to HIV virus had to be cremated in front of his home in a village in Odisha after locals refused to allow the last rites at the public cremation ground. The deceased, 35-year-old Prakash Jena (name changed), was working in Mumbai where he reportedly contracted HIV. As his health deteriorated, he returned to his village Tentei in Balasore district. He was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where he died on Friday.

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court will decide next week on whether to summon Union minister Smriti Irani on a complaint filed against her for allegedly giving false information regarding her academic qualifications in affidavits to the Election Commission. Metropolitan magistrate Harvinder Singh reserved the order for October 18 after the Delhi State Election Commission filed certain records on Irani’s educational qualification submitted by her for contesting the 2004 general elections.

GOVERNMENT CRITICISES HINDUSTAN TIMES OVER MAP
NEW DELHI: The government on Saturday issued a rejoinder to Hindustan Times, expressing displeasure over a map appearing in an advertisement on the paper’s edition dated October 15, 2016. The ad, for China Daily newspaper, depicts a misrepresentation of India’s borders: parts of Jammu & Kashmir, and of the Northeast, are shown as Pakistani or Chinese territory. “The Government conveys its deep displeasure at such an act of omission,” the rejoinder said. “This is not only against the established norms and laws but also deeply hurting to the sentiments of every patriotic Indian.” HT regrets the error in the advertisement, which in no way reflects the newspaper’s views.
