Bihar court admits ‘topper’ minor, must be in remand home

PATNA: A court in Bihar on Monday admitted that the state intermediate exam ‘topper’ Ruby Rai was a minor and directed she be transferred to a remand home.

PATNA: A court in Bihar on Monday admitted that the state intermediate exam ‘topper’ Ruby Rai was a minor and directed she be transferred to a remand home.

Rai (17) was arrested after serious doubts were cast over the authenticity of her high scores in the exam. She had scored 444 out of 500, but was later recorded as saying that political science was a subject about cooking.

She failed to appear for a retest on two occasions, but finally appeared on June 25 after which she was held and sent to Beur jail.

After the local media pointed out she was a minor, the special vigilance court after verifying her matriculation certificate on Monday — which listed her date of birth as November 15, 1998 — declared her a minor. The court also directed its office to segregate all records related to her and hand them over to the JJ Board.
