JAIPUR: In a setback to the ruling BJP, Congress won a majority of posts in Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti by-elections on Sunday. Congress won 13 Panchayati Samiti seats, while the candidates of ruling BJP settled for seven, independents three and BSP one. Of the total 24 seats which went for bypoll, candidates were elected unopposed on four. Of the six Zila Parishad seats, Congress got four - Ajmer, Baran, Jaisalmer and Karoli - and BJP and BSP got one each in Dungarpur and Dholpur respectively.

ED to attach Mallya’s assets worth Rs 6,000 crore

MUMBAI: The Enforcement Directorate has identified assets worth over Rs 6,000 crore which it plans to attach as part of its fresh action against liquor baron Vijay Mallya in connection with a money laundering probe against him and others in an alleged bank loan fraud case. The agency is preparing to initiate the second round of attachments after the embattled businessman recently skipped appearance before a special PMLA court.

Javadekar inaugurates IIT campus in Bhilai

RAIPUR: Union minister for human resource development Prakash Javadekar and Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh jointly inaugurated the transit campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai at the Sejbahar-based government engineering college in Raipur on Sunday. Bhilai is among the six cities to get the IITs after the Institute of Technology (Amendment) Bill 2016 was passed on August 2 this year in the Rajya Sabha.

Army man held in Bihar for carrying liquor bottles

HAJIPUR: The government railway police (GRP) arrested an army jawan from the Hajipur railway station in Vaishali district of north Bihar late on Saturday, after he was found carrying 22 bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL). Bihar went for total prohibition on April 5. Possession of liquor bottles is also an offence under the new law. The jawan was caught while he was about to detrain from the Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express at Hajipur junction.

Haryana issues advisory for Glanders disease

CHANDIGARH: Days after five cases of Glanders disease, which primarily affects horses, were reported in Haryana, the state government on Sunday issued an advisory highlighting measures to prevent its spread. Two cases of the disease were reported in Yamunanagar and three in Sonepat.
