SRINAGAR: A Srinagar court issued a non-bailable warrant against one of the city’s top police officer on Saturday for defying judicial orders, in which he was directed to book an officer for allegedly shooting a youth at point blank range.

The court on July 18 and 28 directed Srinagar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Amit Kumar to file an FIR against deputy SP Yasir Qadri and probe into the death of Shabir Ahmad.

The application filed by Ahmad’s family said a police team headed by Qadri barged into their house on July 10 and started damaging their property.

Ahmad’s mother tried to stop Qadri but he assaulted her, the petition read.

“Ahmad couldn’t tolerate his mother being thrashed and tried to rescue her. The police officer (Qadri) then took out his pistol and fired two shots at him,’’ it said.

Police, however, didn’t probe into the charges against Qadri and instead booked Ahmad for armed rioting and attempt to murder. Witnesses have told local media that Ahmad was killed because he had a history of stone pelting.

The police on Saturday asked for the SSP to be exempted from personal appearance before the court and did not submit a copy of the FIR, which it was directed to.

This infuriated chief judicial magistrate Masarat Shaheen, who issued a non-bailable warrant against Kumar and asked the deputy inspector general of central Kashmir to file a compliance report in two days.

Shaheen also asked the SSP why a contempt proceeding shouldn’t be started against him.
