Ahmednagar district guardian minister, Ram Shinde, and district superintendent of police, Saurav Tripathi, visited Bhambori on Saturday morning, where agitated villagers neglected their appeal for peace. The villagers then observed a bandh on Saturday to protest the incident and the delay in police action, following which, they demolished the men’s cement houses with earth-moving machinery.

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly stopped by five men — who had been hiding in a sugarcane field — on her way to school on Friday. On hearing her screams, her friends and cousin rushed to help her. The villagers caught three men, while two escaped. The men’s families left the village on Friday, fearing backlash.

The villagers suspected that the three police constables, who came to the village, were under the influence of alcohol. They argued with the constables, then took them to the gram panchayat office and locked them inside. The villagers said they found liquor bottles and beer in the police vehicle, which they destroyed.

The district superintendent of police, Saurav Tripathi, arrived at the village on Friday night, along with a medical team. The constables were subjected to medical tests. Tripathi tried to pacify the villagers by announcing that the constables had been suspended with immediate effect. They were released after six hours.
