The teacher, Reba Kalita, has been arrested. However, the police are yet to determine the exact cause of Tarit Sonowal’s death. “We cannot, at this moment, say what caused the boy’s death. We are awaiting the post-mortem report for better understanding of the case,” Dibrugarh district superintendent of police Bir Bikram Gogoi said.

“We have arrested the teacher, but we are not aware of any eve-teasing incident,” he said.

Kalita allegedly punished Tarit, a Class 10 student of Kutoha High School, on Wednesday after a girl studying in the same school complained of him teasing her. Tarit’s family members said the accused teacher broke two canes while beating him.

Tarit was admitted to a private nursing home after he collapsed in the school but was shifted to the Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh town when his condition deteriorated.
