The police identified the man as Navneet Chaudhary, an engineer from Meerut, who works with a multi-national company in Gurgaon. He was booked under the provisions of the Arms Act at the Indirapuram police station.

“The CISF personnel found a .315 calibre weapon inside his bag during scanning at the gate. The man was immediately nabbed and handed over to the police. He has been arrested and an FIR lodged against him,” Atul Kumar Yadav, circle officer at Indirapuram, said.

The family of the accused said he had boarded a bus from Haridwar and was bound for Delhi.

“My brother came to Meerut for the weekend. He boarded a bus from Meerut and was travelling to Vaishali Metro station for onward journey to Gurgaon. It is suspected that someone in the bus had placed the weapon in his bag after he had stored it in the overhead luggage space,” Vinay Chaudhary, his brother, said.

“He is not linked to the weapon but it was found in his bag at the metro station. We came to know about the incident when he called us from his mobile after the CISF personnel had apprehended him. We will approach the court to seek bail,” Chaudhary said.

The family said that the engineer was staying at a rented accommodation in Gurgaon and used to visit Meerut on the weekends.
