The city police have launched an anti-extortion cell to arrest the remaining members of the Sundar Bhati and Anil Dujana gangs.

Superintendent of police (rural) Abhishek Yadav said the cell has already worked on four cases and nabbed some members of the Sundar Bhati gang.

“In the last 10 days, since the induction of the anti-extortion cell, we have managed to solve four major cases and arrest all the accused who were involved in making extortion calls. I have urged the residents that whoever receives an extortion call must meet me personally and the identity of the victim will not be disclosed,” Yadav said.

The police claim that after the arrest of Sundar Bhati and Anil Dujana a couple of years ago, most of their gang members were also nabbed. However, some of them, who have not been identified, were making extortion calls to residents, especially financially sound people.

“The anti-extortion cell is armed with the latest technology to deal with such cases. The members of this cell are specialists in their fields,” Yadav said.

The police claim the anti-extortion cell arrested one person from Jewar, two from Kasna, two from Ecotech 3 locality and one from Greater Noida police station locality, for making extortion calls.

“Two of the arrested accused were found to be working for the Sundar Bhati gang, while one of them is a close associate of Anil Dujana. The accused demanded extortion from shop owners, businessmen, small and medium factory owners and other financially sound persons. The names of the victims have been kept secret,” Yadav said.

In the last one month, more than 10 cases of extortion calls were reported from Greater Noida. The police say they are compiling details of those suspects who are still at large and a crackdown will be launched against them soon.

The warlords of crime

Sundar Bhati: Fifty-two-year old Bhati is considered the most dreaded criminal in western UP. More than 40 cases of extortion, abduction for ransom, murder, smuggling and attempt to murder are lodged against him. His rivalry with gangster Anil Dujana led to many gang wars in Greater Noida. He was arrested on December 30 last year and is presently lodged in Maharajganj jail. Last year, one of Bhati’s accomplices was arrested with a bullet-proof SUV. Bhati is also an accused in the murder of gangster Anil Dujana’s youngest brother Jai Bhagwan.

Anil Dujana: Dujana is an arch rival of Bhati gang and is also an accused in the murder of local BJP leader Vijay Pandit. Police say Dujana runs a parallel empire of extortion, smuggling of iron rod. He is allegedly involved in the murder of a number of members of the Bhati gang. Dujana was arrested in 2012 and, since then, has been lodged in Muzaffarnagar prison. Anil Dujana won the recently held panchayat electionsfrom ward number 2 in Gautam Budh Nagar district by a margin of over 10,000 votes.
