According to the police, the accident took place around 5am when an Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) bus lost its balance on the Dadri Kot Luharli highway, skidded into a field and then turned upside down. The bus belonged to the Shahjahanpur bus depot and was ferrying passengers from Bulandshahr to Ghaziabad. At the time of the accident, more than two dozen persons were in the vehicle.

“We received information that a bus had met with an accident 200 metres ahead of the Dadri toll plaza at Kot Luharli village. A team was sent to rescue the passengers immediately. Eight injured persons were rushed to the government hospital in Dadri,” Ram Sen Singh, station house officer, Dadri police station, said.

According to the police, one person, identified as 35-year-old Ram Kumar from Shahjahanpur, suffered fatal injuries in the accident.

“Ram was declared dead on arrival by a team of doctors at the hospital. The other seven persons were given medical treatment and they are out of danger,” Singh said.

The police said that prima facie, it appeared that the accident took place because the driver dozed off at the wheel.

“The bus’s first left tyre skidded into a small pit, which made the bus lose balance and overturn. We suspect the driver had dozed off,” Singh said.

Both the driver and the conductor of the bus are on the run.

“We have lodged a case of negligent driving against the two accused who are currently on the run. Ram Kumar’s family has also been informed. Soon, arrests will be made. The bus has been removed from the spot,” Singh added.
