The incident took place around 1am on Wednesday when the commercial pick-up vehicle, driven by Surendra Kumar, 28, broke through the side grilles of the flyover and fell down, damaging the shops under the flyover.

“The driver was admitted to a local hospital, but he did not sustain any severe injuries and escaped with minor bruises. He said that he nodded off on the wheel and lost control of the vehicle. The owner of the damaged shops did not file any complaint as the driver offered to pay him damages,” said Dal Chand, station house officer, Sihani Gate police station.

According to the police, the vehicle was coming at high speed from Chaudhary Morh and had ascended the flyover when the incident took place. The driver was heading back home to Bamheta from Delhi.

Earlier in March, a similar incident had taken place at the same flyover. On the night of March 11, 2016, a speeding Bolero, driven at around 100kmph, crashed into the side grilles of the flyover and came crashing down on the shops under the flyover. The vehicle damaged a house in process and a woman suffered minor injuries, but no lives were lost.
