Senior superintendent of police, Gautam Budh Nagar, is going to organise a seminar for police personnel to sensitise them about dealing with issues related to women, senior citizens and children. The seminar was scheduled after the SSP had to face flak for the behaviour of his subordinates.

Recently, Meerut range inspector general (IG) Ram Kumar and Meerut zone divisional commissioner Anita Meshram were in Noida to look into the matter of retired army colonel Virendra Singh Chauhan being arrested allegedly on a wrong complaint given by the wife of an additional district magistrate of a west UP district. The ADM has since then been suspended.

SSP Ajay Pal Sharma had to face a 12-hour inquiry following the conduct of his subordinates while arresting the colonel.

On Monday, a 24-year-old journalist and her friend were allegedly sexually harassed by a man in Sector 12-22 of Noida and it had prompted the National Commission for Women to ask the police for a report on the incident. It was alleged that a police constable misbehaved with the woman journalist and delayed the process of registering an FIR.

“We need to make our police personnel understand the importance of good behaviour while dealing with women complainants. We are organising a seminar wherein experts will be sensitising personnel of the constable rank and above so that they can deal with women, senior citizens and children in a better way. The seminar will be likely take place on Sunday (September 2),” Sharma said.

The SSP also met with senior officers of the district to ensure that women’s complainants are treated in a fair manner. “All COs have been asked to ensure personnel behave properly with complainants,” the SSP said.

Over the last two months, police have picked up over 150 men for harassing women. “We have been picking up men who try to create an inconvenience for women in the district. We are also trying to find the person who sexually harassed the woman journalist,” Sharma said.
