Karunanidhi dies at 94: Vishwanathan Anand pays tribute to ‘patron of sport’

Karunanidhi died on Thursday after a prolonged illness and chess grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand paid tributes to the Tamil Nadu politician on Twitter.

M Karunanidhi, DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu chief minister, died on Thursday at the age of 94. A five-term chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Karunanidhi was a multi-faceted personality--a top politician, a star scriptwriter for Tamil movies, author and an impressive orator.

He was also a big supporter of sports in the state and chess grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand paid tributes to the politician after his death.

Anand took to Twitter to express his grief at Karunanidhi’s death and he wrote: “Saddened to hear the passing of Respected M. Karunanidhi. One of the greats of Tamil politics. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times in my career. When I first became World Champion , he felicitated me & presented me with a chess set that I cherish.”

“A patron of sport and achievement. I have always admired his speeches and his eloquence. My deepest condolences to his family.#kalaignar”, he added on the social networking site.

Karunanidhi was the chief minister of Tamil Nadu when Anand won the World Championships back in 2001 and Anand wrote that he received a chess set from the politician as gift as the tournament.

Karunanidhi had telephoned and congratulated him in Teheran on winning the title and Anand was also gifted a flat in Chennai by the chief minister because of his performance in the tournament and.
