National Aquatic Championship: Utkarsh Ghor, Sanjiti Saha set national records

Maharashtra’s Utkarsh Ghor stole the limelight with a rare distinction of breaking two records on the same day, while Sanjiti Saha from Mumbai broke the national record in the 100m butterfly event at the National Aquatic Championship

Medals rained for Maharashtra on the first day of the 34th Sub-junior National Aquatic Championship as the hosts dominated with six golds, two silvers and four bronze medals at Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi on Wednesday.

Maharashtra’s Utkarsh Ghor stole the limelight with a rare distinction of breaking two records on the same day. He broke the national record in 50m backstroke event with a timing of 34.88s during the heats for final. In the final, he bettered his own record by finishing the event in 34.30s. He added another gold medal in the 50m freestyle with a timing of 30.55s.

Utakarsh’s third gold came in the team event, when he, along with Armaan Jetha, Vivaan Thakur and Rishabh Das, clocked 2:09.55s in the 4X50m freestyle relay event. Assam grabbed its sixth silver with a time of 2:10.01s, while Delhi won its second medal of the day with a time of 2:14.23s.

Meanwhile, Mumbai girls Sanjiti Saha, who trains at Khar Gymkhana, and Palak Dhami, who trains at the Glenmark Aquatic Foundation, reached pinnacle in the 100m butterfly event. Both girls smashed national records, with Sanjiti winning gold with a new meet record of 01:07.77s and Palak claiming silver with a timing of 1:08.82 sec.

Vedika Amin won yet another gold for Maharashtra in the girls’ 50m breaststroke Group III event with a time of 36.49 sec. Apeksha Fernandes joined her state mate in winning bronze with a time of 37.85s, while Samara Chacko won silver for Karnataka with a time of 37.85s.
