Disappointing start for archers at Worlds

It was a disappoin-ting day for the Indian women recurve archers at the World Championships which got underway in Antalya, Turkey. The trio of Deepika Kumari and veterans Dola Banerjee and Chekrovolu Swuro were ranked 12th in the team championships.

It was a disappoin-ting day for the Indian women recurve archers at the World Championships which got underway in Antalya, Turkey. The trio of Deepika Kumari and veterans Dola Banerjee and Chekrovolu Swuro were ranked 12th in the team championships.

In the qualification round, Deepika, Dola and Chekrovolu shot 1345, 1300 and 1283 points respectively, and were ranked 10th, 49th and 71st respectively for the individual competition.

The Archery Association of India had picked a new look team for the World Championships because the competition has multiple distances in the qualifying round. So it organised trials in Aurangabad to pick the team. L Bombayla Devi and Rimil Buriuly missed out by a few points in the trials which had one qualification and three elimination draws. “We did not put any weightage on the international performances. The team for the Worlds was picked on the performance in the national ranking and selection trials,” said federation official Gunjan Abrol.

So the young combination of Deepika, Bombayla and Rimil, who won back to back World Cup gold medals in Medellin and Wroclaw this year, the latter defeating Korea in the final, was rejected and veterans brought back into the fold.htc
