The range officer at the venue brought the incident to the notice of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) recently.

The NRAI's disciplinary panel is expected to review the issue for necessary action next week. Confirming this, senior NRAI official Baljit Singh Sethi said that it was really silly on the part of the MLA to depute someone to compete in his place. "There was nothing big at stake. Malik could be debarred from competing in tournaments organized by the NRAI," said Sethi.

However, Malik denied any misconduct. "I was issued an identity card for the tournament. I didn't depute anyone," he said. "During the event, my telescope wasn't functioning properly. So, I asked someone to check it. That's all."
