Champia fails to make the cut for CWG

Kolkata: Mangal Singh Champia, India's lone male archer at the Beijing Olympics, failed to qualify for the men's recurve team for the Commonwealth Games (CWG).

This is for the first time since 2007 that Champia has missed the cut. "It is unfortunate Champia lost out. But we had to hold the trials because only in the CWG do we have three-member teams. Everywhere else teams comprise four members. Champia finished fourth and he will be in the Asian Games team, which follows the Delhi Games," national coach Limba Ram said on Monday. Rai showed signs of returning to form after winning the individual gold at the SAF Games in Dhaka early this year.

CWG teams - Recurve men: Tarundeep Rai, Jayanta Talukdar, Rahul Banerjee. Recurve women: Dola Banerjee, L. Bombayla Devi, Deepika Kumari. Compound men: C. Srither, C.H. Jignas, Ritul Chatterjee. Compound women: Jhanu Hansda, Gagandeep Kaur, Bheigyabati Chanu. Asian Games teams - Recurve men: T.Rai, J.Talukdar, R.Banerjee, M.S. Champia. Recurve women: D. Banerjee, L.B.Devi, D.Kumari.
