Infuriated flood-hit people on Thursday thrashed the circle officer and vandalised government property at Rupauli in Purnia district.
They were angry over the alleged apathy of the local administration towards their plight.
Incidentally, large areas of Rupauli block, adjacent to Katihar and Naugachhia, have been inundated with floods and thousands of people have been badly affected.
According to sources, CO Rajkumar Prasad was in his office when hundreds of flood victims descended there.
They held him hostage and demanded adequate flood relief.
Prasad’s answers were not enough to quell the mob’s anger ultimately leading to his thrashing.
Other staff were also beaten up.
Besides, the mob damaged the RTPS counter adjacent to the office.
Dhamdaha DCLR Rakesh Ranjan, who was also present in the circle office, somehow managed to escape the mob and informed SDO Anil Tiwari and SDPO S K Prabhat about the incident.
They reached the spot with adequate forces and chased away the mob.
Confirming the incident, the SDO described it as a handiwork of anti-social elements and stressed those responsible for it would not be spared.
“Stern action will be taken against those who took law into their hands,” he said adding the lawbreakers were being identified.
The circle office staff said theCO had sustained injuries andwas undergoing treatment in a private clinic.
They said the flood-affected people were adamant on their demand that they be provided adequate flood relief and were not ready to budge even an inch from there until the demand was met.
