Manoj Kumar Singh, in his late 20s, was arrested late on Monday in Banka district, Superintendent of Police Jitendra Rana told IANS over phone. He is a resident of Alipur village in Banka, about 200 km from Patna.

Police are interrogating him and have begun investigations to ascertain the details behind the threat to kill Kumar, Rana said.

The police official said that Singh sent the SMS threatening to kill Kumar to JD-U legislator Bhudeo Choudhary's cell phone on Monday evening and demanded Rs 10 million from him.

Choudhary immediately informed Nitish Kumar, who ordered senior police officials to look into the matter. Police in Banka were alerted and Singh was arrested soon after, a senior police official said in Patna.

Choudhary is the JD-U candidate from neighbouring Jamui parliamentary constituency in the Lok Sabha polls scheduled from April-May.
