On International Women's Day, Hindustan Times caught up with ordinary women who have earned their economic independence and sent across a message of women empowerment. They have uplifted the condition of their families, started businesses and achieved success. We look at eight such inspiring women. Hailing from the nomadic Gadiya Lohar (blacksmith) community of Rajasthan, Babli and her family have been living in a makeshift shelter in the Mayapuri area of New Delhi. In a month, she makes around Rs 2000-2,500, which helps her send her four children to school.Text by Swati Kundra

At 24, Richa Sachar, a promising fashion designer, is all set to take her two-year old online portal 'The French Darjee' to the next level. At present, she is able to generate monthly revenue of Rs 50,000.

Workaholic Jigyasa Laroiya (30) started a home-based brand consulting firm 30TH FEB in East Delhi in November 2009. Married to her work, she credits her husband's support for her success. On average, she makes Rs 65,000 per month.

Rajni (37), a bead and mehndi artist, owns a small stall outside Dilli Haat near INA market. A mother of four, she is the only breadwinner in the family. She manages to earn Rs 5-7,000 every month.

Monica (24) has been working as an attendant at New Moti Bagh’s petrol station, run by an all-woman staff, for the past eight years. She started working at an early age to support her family of three. Her monthly income of Rs 10,000 (approx.) helps her mother, a cook in the same colony, manage the expenses.

To be able to send her two children to school, Babita, 28, commutes everyday from Janak Puri to Hari Nagar in New Delhi where she irons clothes. She has been working here with her husband and mother-in-law for the past six years, ever since she got married. She is able to make Rs 2,000-3,000 every month.

Geeta Mondol (49) is the founder and director of Ashish Foundation, a Delhi-based NGO for autistic children. Herself a mother of an autistic child, she started the NGO in 2007 to help differently-abled children and became part of the cause.
