112th SPPU convocation ceremony: Close to 100K students ‘graduate’ on January 20

Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) will hold its 112th convocation ceremony on January 20, vice-chancellor Nitin Karmalkar announced on Wednesday. As chief guest, eminent scientist and educationist,Raghunath Anant Mashelkar will be present at the ceremony.
The 2016-17 convocation will be held near the new building and will include felicitation of students from across the university’s 10 departments, officials informed.
A total of 97,133 students, undergraduate and post-graduate, are to graduate from their respective courses on the day.
However, only the post-graduate students, that is 17,533 students will be given their post-graduation degrees, along with 347 PhD students.
A total of 79,221 undergraduate students, will be getting their marksheets and certificates in their respective colleges on February 27.
In addition to this, the convocation will also felicitate 58 students with gold medals.
“After the changes, made under the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016, this convocation will be the first for students. All students who are to get their degrees on that day are required to be present at the new building from 10 am to 4 pm,” Karmalkar said.
The highest number of students graduating will be from the engineering faculty, with 46,511 students, of which 1,332 are post-graduate students, a statement shared by the university reflected.
