Following the traditions of the past few years, the state government this year too has decided not to play spoilsport during this year’s festive season by allowing the revellers to party until 5 am, adding cheer to party-goers wanting to usher into the new year by partying all night.

The government in its notification issued on Thursday said hotels, permit rooms, bars and liquor shops within the commissionerate will remain open beyond midnight on December 24, 25 and 31.

According to the notification, earlier, the state excise department in a letter to the government had sought extension in the deadline following which the government issued the notification.

The deadline has been extended from 10.30 pm to 1 am for liquor shops from the existing 11 pm while hotels and permit rooms in the district will be able to sell liquor till 5 am.

The notification further states that FL2 (vendor licensees) can sell liquor from 10.30 am to 1 pm the next day. Similarly for FLW2 licensees.

For CL3 licensees, the notification states that all ‘C’ level municipalities and Zilla Parishads except cantonment boards can sell liquor from 10 pm to 1 am next day.

The directives further stated that the district collector was empowered to take the decision on whether to rescind the timings taking into account the law and order situation of the area.

Welcoming the notification, Ganesh Shetty, president of Pune hoteliers, said, “Since last two years, the government has extended the deadline and there has been no law and order issue. This year too government has taken a positive step to allow people to celebrate the New Year.”

Sources from the excise department said, New year and Christmas are the two major occasion for government to earn revenue. By extending the deadline, the government is ensuring that additional revenue continue to come, said sources.
