Besides commencement of the expansion work of the Lohegaon International airport in Pune, which is operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Pune authorities of AAI have also started the process of acquiring land where the work will be done in consecutive phases.

Nitin Gadkari, Union transport minister and chairman of the infrastructure committee, had asked the state government to immediately transfer 25 acres to the Indian Air force (IAF) and AAI. Out of the 25 acres, IAF will receive 15 acres in lieu of the 15.84 acres which the IAF had given to AAI, while the remaining 10 acres will go to AAI.

In return, the AAI has taken a decision to return 10 acres of land to the IAF at different airport premises which are operated by the AAI.

Member of Parliament from the city, Anil Shirole, said, “The work of integrated terminal is expected to be completed in the next 30 months. The new terminal will provide great assistance in tackling the traffic flow of the passengers from the International Lohegaon airport in the city.”

The expansion project includes construction of a new terminal building at an estimated cost of ₹500 crore, a multilevel car parking for ₹120 crore and a new cargo complex at a cost of about ₹300 crore.

Pune airport director Ajay Kumar said, “The entire process of works related to land acquisition for the expansion of the existing Lohegaon International airport in Pune is being done through a barter system. The land which we have at different airports operated by AAI will be exchanged with the IAF for the land we have acquired from them as a barter system.”

Including the Ahmedabad airport, there are other five airports run by AAI which will witness the transfer of land from the AAI to IAF, said Kumar.

Meanwhile, the work of new integrated terminal worth ₹358.89 crore has been awarded to a company named ITD Cementation India Ltd. The work tender was awarded to the company on September 1.
