Pune The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) is considering a proposal of the Pune Smart City development corporation (PSCDCL), to install wifi on all its buses.

In a meeting between Nayana Gunde, PMPML chairman and director, and Rajendra Jagtap, CEO, PSCDCL, Jagtap proposed the idea to make the PMPML’s existing bus fleet “smart and efficient”.

According to Jagtap, neither the PMPML nor the Pune municipal corporation (PMC) will have to invest in the project as PSCDCL will bear the entire cost.

Jagtap said, “Good and efficient city transport is an important aspect as a part of the smart city development. Taking cognisance of this fact, we have extended assistance to PMPML.”

“We are in talks with PMC as well,” Jagtap added.

Appreciating the PSCDCL proposal, Gunde said, “Installation of the wifi and cameras are very important for the department as well. Although the proposal is good, it will have to be approved by the board of directors and only then will it be executed.”

However, citizen activists have accused the administration of not prioritising the right needs.

Sanjay Shitole, secretary, PMP Pravasi Manch, said, “Installations of wifi systems should not be the priority. Instead, PMPML should focus on providing sustainable bus services. PSCDCL is a government institution. Ergo, the funds which will be utilised will come from the tax payer’s money.”

Responding to claims made by Shitole, a senior PMPML official requesting anonymity said, “PMPML is already working towards acquiring over 500 electric buses. Our prime focus is to increase the number of buses plying on city roads. Considering this fact, we don’t see any problem in accepting the proposal given by the PSCDCL as it will only add to the facilities which will be availed of by citizens.”

PSCDCL’s smart plan for PMPML buses

- Wifi on all buses

- Mobile charging docks

- CCTV cameras

- LED display systems
