Soon you can monitor Pune’s live traffic flow information at ‘smart’ messaging displays
In what is considered as a unique and smart way of improving and monitoring traffic flow in the city, the Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited (PSCDCL), on Thursday, signed a memorandum of understanding with a navigation technology company called Tom Tom to develop a mechanism called ‘poc’, which will help track live traffic information.

While addressing a press conference, Rajendra Jagtap, chief executive officer, PSCDCL, said, “Traffic congestion and related problems are one of the major concerns identified by city residents. Our collaboration with Tom Tom is our effort at solving this problem.”
He further added, “While the information can be accessed through an app, it will also be displayed on Pune Smart City special purpose vehicle’s variable messaging displays (VMD) at key destinations in Pune. This will help residents make smarter decisions in selecting routes while travelling as real time information will be available to them.”
A trial run of the technology has already started, added Jagtap.
PSCDCL is a special purpose vehicle constituted by government of Maharashtra and Pune Municipal Corporation to drive the implementation of the Pune Smart City Mission.
Speaking on the benefits of the new technology, Ashok Morale, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Pune, said, “Currently, we have the mechanism to monitor traffic flow only at the junctions and it functions through CCTV surveillance systems installed at various locations across the city. However, with this MoU, we will now be able to track live traffic data from across the city.”
Barbara Belpaire, general manager, Tom Tom, said, “It is indeed our privilege to be partnering with PSCDCL. We have identified three phases of the poc with the Pune Smart City viz travel time on VMDs, area specific traffic jams on VMDs and social media channels along with citizen alerts and notifications.”
Founded in 1991 and headquartered in Amsterdam, Tom Tom is a dutch company that produces traffic, navigation and mapping products.
