Students from department of English at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on Wednesday went on hunger strike outside the department appealing to the vice chancellor hear their demands and help them.
The students of second year Masters have been demanding that the final exams which will begin from April 27 be postponed and justice be served to all the students. If this was not enough, some of the students who have opted for LGBT course are finding it tough with a young professor who uses foul language in messages and indirectly points out the questions for the finals too, said students.
Satish Gore, President NSUI , SPPU, said, “The students of English Department are on hunger strike against the dictatorial style of the Head of department of English and demanding justice. It has been a whole semester where the students have been made to suffer discrimination at the level of class-caste-linguistic divide.”
Indrayani Wadhfatte, second year Masters English literature who is also on a hunger strike said, “ Out of 66 students, 33 of us are on hunger strike until our demands are fulfilled by Vice Chancellor (VC) Nitin Karmalkar. “ We all went to meet the VC but he didn’t meet him, then we met Pro VC Nehru Umrani who did not give us any firm solution nor anything in writing.”
“We need experienced teachers to teach us LGBT,” said Mahesh Shivamnikam, SY MA, department of English. “The teachers are not eligible to teach us, we failed to understand what the teachers taught us. It was only during self study we found out that there was more of the portion than was taught. If we have to do it ourselves and find answers for a new subject from others then what good are such teachers.”
The students had earlier too complained about the associate teachers falling short in teaching the current batch and there was an enquiry committee set up too but there was no concrete solution hence the students took to hunger strike.
“We have complained several times but department did not pay attention to us and they have appointed Zameer Kamble for LGBT, but he is very partial with students, he has given average marks to every one even to those students who have never attended only one lecture and have quit have course, even they have got marks.” said Sphurti Kayastha SY MA ,who opted for LGBT ad scored less marks. “We have so many problems of discrimination between students, rural and urban, with teachers not cooperating with us all , they always give us less marks than convent educated students. Our demand is to postpone the final exam, which was prematurely conducted exam which take place on 27 April 2018, because they haven’t given us no preparation leave , until 20 April we were continuously giving our internals and we were struggling for marks for LGBT as well facing mental torture from the teaching associates.”
