A young woman was allegedly gang-raped by her friend's husband and his friends in Moga district of Punjab, just hours after the death of a teenage girl who was molested and pushed out of a bus in the same region.

The 23-year-old victim told police she was with a male friend when her friend's husband and others gangraped her in Mari Mustafa village early on Thursday.

Police registered a case of rape. Jaswant Singh, the husband of the victim’s friend, was arrested in Moga and police were carrying out raids to trace four other men who are on the run, inspector general of police (Bathinda zone) PS Umranangal said on Friday.

The victim said in her complaint that the men, all residents of Mari Mustafa, took her to a nearby field and allegedly raped her. They then left her in the field, she said.

She said she had gone to her friend Sarabjit's residence in Mari Mustafa with a male friend on Wednesday. They both decided to stay at Sarabjit’s home as her husband Jaswant Singh was not at home.

Jaswant Singh returned late at night with a group of around eight friends. They allegedly beat up the victim's male friend and then gangraped her.

Inspector Kashmir Kaur of the special crime branch said the woman was sent for a medical examination and a case was registered under the Indian Penal Code.

The incident occurred a day after a 13-year-old girl and her mother were thrown off a bus by a group of men who molested them. The teenager died while her mother was seriously injured.
