Amritsar doctor kidnapping: Released after gang gets Rs 7.5 lakh in ransom
Gangsters threaten to kidnap him again if he fails to pay Rs 60 more by Sunday; police heighten security
A city-based doctor was kidnapped by gangsters when he was on his way home on Thursday evening. He was released only after the doctor’s wife paid them Rs 7.5-lakh in ransom.
The victim, Dr Munish Kumar, of Amritsar’s Ranjit Avenue area owns a private hospital in Ajnala, 20km from district headquarters. As he reached Bhala village, 8km from Ajnala, four persons, suspected to be gangsters, kidnapped him.
As per the hospital’s CCTV footage, the gangsters started following him when he left for home. “After leaving my hospital, I went to gurdwara Mehal Bukhari for 10 minutes. According to the footage, they waited for me and again started following me when I left for Amritsar,” said the victim.
“On reaching Bhala around 7.30 pm, three of them stopped my vehicle and kidnapped me at gunpoint. They demanded Rs 2 crore in ransom and even threatened to kill me. “They asked me to contact my family members for money,” said the victim.
“I asked my wife to collect cash available at home and give it my friend. The kidnappers sent a person named Harry to my house, where my friend gave them Rs 7.5 lakh,” said Kumar.
After getting the money, they released the victim on the Loharka road and he reached home at 11pm, he said.
“Before releasing me, they threatened to kidnap me again if I fail to pay them Rs 60 lakh by Sunday,” he said.
The police have registered a case against unidentified persons and have also provided security to the doctor.
ADGP Rohit Chaudhary and police commissioner SS Srivastava also visited the victim’s house and assured security to him and his family.
