The case of a councillor who tried to stop an official of the municipal corporation's building branch in performing her duty has snowballed into an issue.
On one hand, councillors are asking mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria to take action against the assistant town planner (ATP), on the other hand, the building branch officials are alleging that interference by councillors and politicians is increasing day by day.
The councillors held a meeting with the mayor on Friday and apprised him of the situation. Gohalwaria assured them that he would take up the matter with the MC commissioner.
In an incident which took place on Friday, the officials of building branch went to the Ludhiana-Chandigarh road to remove illegal encroachments. Area councillor Sukhdev Singh Gill of the SAD came to the spot and allegedly started arguing with ATP of Zone A Kamaljit Kaur among others.
Gill allegedly asked the officials to give time to residents and do not demolish illegal encroachments. However, the officials complied with the orders of the high court.
Monika Anand and Rajinder Sharma ATPs of zone B and D, respectively, were also present on the spot.
One of the ATPs said, “The interference of politicians and other leaders should be stopped. This causes distraction in our work and harassment for us.”
The MC has prepared an action plan against illegal encroachments throughout the city on the orders of Punjab and Haryana high court. However, they face political interference in many areas.
Kamaljit Kaur has never succumbed to political pressure. Leaders have made complaints against her several times, but she says that she complied with the directions of high court.
