Building bylaws violation: 7 months on, Jalandhar MC fails to act against private hospitals

The violations, which came to light in October last year, had put Jalandhar municipal corporation officials in a fix and had caught the attention of local bodies department who had demanded action against the violators.
When contacted, senior town planner (STP) Hemant Batra said the MC was going through the legal process after which action would be taken against the hospitals as per the law. He said 126 private hospitals running in the city were violating building bylaws would get speaking orders from the MC advocate by next week.
Building branch officials said that since they don’t have a legal authority over the case, they are seeking help of their advocate so that they don’t face any kind of obstacle at the time of taking action. Batra said the hospitals would be asked to demolish illegal part of the structure.
“They will be given time to carry out demolition on their own,” said an official of the building branch. If the identified hospitals fail to remove the structure within the stipulated time, the building branch team will carry out a demolition drive, added.
Hospitals in residential areas will be sealed:STP
Strict action will be taken against violators, but there is no provision of imposing a penalty, said officials. When asked on action against hospitals in residential areas, the STP said the ones found operating from residential areas would be sealed. In March this year, all 126 identified hospitals were asked to appear in the MC office and submit their reply on violations. Officials said officials of 121 hospitals turned up for the hearing.
