The two departments plan to share vital information related to tax payers, tax collection and documents recovered during search operations by excise officials.

The decision was taken during a meeting of Ludhiana deputy excise and taxation commissioner Kamalpreet Brar and Rajiv Bhatia, commissioner, central excise and customs, Ludhiana commissionerate.

Stating that both departments were considering sharing information to enhance their efficiency, Brar said it was still early to comment on the details, but both departments were mulling over it.

“By getting access to information about the tax payees registered with the central department, state excise department can zero in on people evading state tax, which would help in raising our tax collection,” she said, adding that the move would help the central excise department as well.

“The sharing of information will be very beneficial for the state excise department, as the persons under the ambit of central excise will also be liable to pay value added tax (VAT) in the state. Any information in the hands of central department will help us in nabbing tax evaders,” said an officer of the excise and taxation department.

Confirming the meeting with Brar, Bhatia said they were chalking out a plan in this direction. However, he too didn't give any framework of the extended cooperation between the departments.
