According to the Indian meteorological department (IMD)’s definition of intensity of rain, this falls in the heavy category (64.5-124.4mm).

At 146.5mm, the monthly rain this June is already the highest in the past five years.

With more rain expected due to the ongoing system till Tuesday, followed by easterlies, pre-monsoon and monsoon by the month-end, the figure can cross 274.5mm recorded in June 2013.

Surender Paul, director of the IMD’s local centre, said monsoon is expected to arrive around June 30.

“Pre-monsoon showers are expected towards the end of this week or beginning of next week. Rainfall is also expected from the easterly winds. Also, the existing weather will persist till Tuesday, followed by more rain towards Thursday,” he said.

Meanwhile, maximum temperature climbed to 30.7°C, a jump of a notch as compared to Sunday’s 29.4°C. However, it remained seven degrees below normal.

The minimum temperature on Sunday night fell to 21.1°C, the lowest this June, as compared to 23.5°C the previous night.

However, even as more rain is on the cards, IMD officials have predicted a sharp rise in temperature. Mercury is expected to breach 35°C on Monday.

“But it will remain below normal if it rains in the afternoon,” said the weatherman.
