A debt-ridden farmer, Harjit Singh, 50, allegedly committed suicide at Adaltiwala village near Devigarh, around 20km from Patiala.

He allegedly consumed some poisonous substance on June 17 and was admitted to a hospital in Chandigarh where he died on Sunday. According to information, he was under a debt of Rs 30 lakh and was cultivating 4 acres of land.
“He had taken loan from banks and moneylenders and was upset due to the mounting debt,” said his relative.
Head constable Julkan police station said he was under desperation. The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the body had been handed over to the family after post-mortem, he added.
