‘Denied smartphone’, 14-year-old girl hangs self in Ludhiana

A Class-8 student ended her life reportedly after her parents denied buying a smartphone for her. The 14-year-old Simran hanged self from a hook in the ceiling of her house at Sundar Nagar on Monday evening when her mother had gone to pay obeisance at a temple.

Victim’s mother Geeta told the police that Simran engaged in an argument with her over buying a smartphone; afterwards the mother went to a nearby temple, said assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Rajwant Singh, in-charge at Sundar Nagar police post. When she came back, she found Simran’s body hanging, and shouted for help. Later, they called police.

Simran’s father Karan Kumar said, we told her that she was too young to have a phone and they could not afford to buy a phone for her. The ASI said her body was transferred to the family after conducting the post-mortem. Police have not found any suicide note from the house.

A student of Holy Path School, Simran was the eldest among four siblings. Geeta said though Simran was a bright student, she had developed a craving for mobile phones and expensive dresses lately.
