The alleged incident had triggered vehement student protests in the picturesque Dharamsala town, after fictitious stories were circulated on social networking site Facebook and messaging app WhatsApp.

In a press statement, CID inspector general of police (IG) Rakesh Aggarwal urged the people to share information about the content and origin of such mischievous messages.

"In the alleged gang rape case, a number of fictitious stories were circulated on social networking sites from May 17 to 25," the IG said.

"Anyone having information about the content or origin of such messages is requested to share it with the police through the email address igp-cid-hp@nic.in or telephonically at 94180-13229, so that appropriate action can be taken against the culprits," he added. Aggarwal said identity of the informers would remain secret.
