Fed up of NIA grilling about Shiv Sena Punjab leader’s murder, cobbler ends life in Ludhiana

Fed up of being repeatedly questioned by National Investigation Agency (NIA) sleuths in the murder case of Durga Prasad Gupta (28) president of labour wing of Shiv Sena Punjab, a cobbler ended his life by jumping in the Sirhind Canal on Tuesday morning. The NIA allegedly wanted him to depose as an eyewitness in the case, but he was reluctant.
The deceased has been identified as Rampal, 55, of Beelan Wali Chhapri of Khanna. He ran his makeshift shop at Lalheri chowk, where Durga Prasad Gupta was gunned down by unidentified assailants on April 23, 2016.
The NIA had been questioning him repeatedly about the incident while investigating the targeted killings in Punjab. His family said the NIA wanted him to become an witness in the case. Before jumping into the canal, he made a call to his family and told them that he was going to end his life.
The family members alerted police following which a rescue operation was initiated. The police fished out his body from the canal.
