The deceased have been identified as Kulbir Singh, Gurjant Singh, Jasbir Singh and Parkash Singh, all residents of Bhaini Warring village in Ludhiana.

Giving details about the incident, Harike SHO Harjinder Singh said, "The incident took place early in the morning. A Swift Dezire car was coming from Amritsar side when a truck coming from the opposite direction collided with it head on. The truck dragged the car to several metres, finally pushing it into a deep pit along the roadside".

He said a rescue operation was launched and the vehicles were separated by using gas cutters and other equipment, but all the four occupants of the car had died on the spot.

The SHO said that Kulbir Singh was driving the car and he, along with three other victims, was returning after dropping someone at the Amritsar Airport.

He said that the truck driver ran away from the spot immediately after the accident, leaving the vehicle behind. A case has been registered and efforts are on to nab the driver, he added.
