“Prima facie it appears that Sunil, who was behind the wheel, might have dozed off and lost control over the vehicle that resulted in the fatal collision,” said Mullepur station house officer Pradeep Singh Bajwa.
The police added that ambulances were rushed to the spot and the victims were taken to a nearby hospital where four were declared as brought dead.
The injured — identified as Baby and Pinky, both in their 30s, and a five- month-old child, have been to a Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where their condition is stated to be critical.
